Good morning everyone and Happy #shrovetuesday 🥞

Today #pershoreabi is enjoying breakfast with her dear friend #mrsrabbit Abi has her #livelent books from @thechurchofengland and is keen to learn all about #lent traditions.

Mrs Rabbit explained to Abi that Shrove Tuesday happens on a different day every year and is the beginning of the 40 days leading into Easter, which this year is on 12th April.

Lent is traditionally a time of Christian fasting and sacrifice where people give things up - such as sweets and chocolate.

With this in mind, families used up all rich ingredients in their cupboards so that they could start Lent the next day.

The ingredients for pancakes - eggs, flour and milk - used to be very common things for people to give up for Lent, so it made sense to use them all up.

“So why is it called Shrove Tuesday?” asked Abi.

“Well ...” said Mrs Rabbit, “The word ‘shrove’ is derived from ‘shrive’, which means to have your sins forgiven by doing penance. Tomorrow will be Ash Wednesday and we will be marked on our foreheads by Claire with the sign of the cross from the ash of the palm crosses. We will be reminded that we are made from dust and will return to dust. We must turn away from sin and be faithful to God.”

“So I can’t have any chocolate for 40 days?” said Abi sadly. Mrs Rabbit smiled.

“I’m sure being such a good little bear you can have a little chocolate” she said kindly. “Don’t forget that this year we are going to pledge to #careforgodscreation and look after the earth to try and combat #climatechange so you could give up things to help the environment such as using less plastic, less electricity or water!”

Abi thinks that is a marvellous idea and over their pancake breakfast they are taking a look through the booklets for more ideas. ... See MoreSee Less
